Music Xray Review: Is it a reliable source of income?

Work-at-home jobs are now a popular option nowadays since the global pandemic started.

As you’re searching for a way to earn income at home, you might have come across with Music Xray. They are a company that pays you by just listening to music (Uhmm… sounds interesting, right?)

But, you might be in doubt whether the company is legitimate or a scam. If so, then this review is for you!

In this review, I will attempt to put those aside and helped you decide whether the company is a good fit for you or not.

So without further delays, let’s begin my Music Xray review…

What is Music Xray?

Music Xray is an online platform that pays two types of members—a contributing musician and listener.

If you’re a musician that’s just starting out, then Music Xray is an excellent way to get exposure and get your music into the public.

The process begins by submitting your music to the platform. And then allow work of art to be heard and reviewed by members signed for the Fan Match.

And as a listener, you’re not only going to discover new artists but also get paid just by listening to their music.

I will explain in the following section how it works, and how both the musician and listener earn income.

Be reminded as well that their GPT service is currently unavailable. But they promise to reinstate the feature in the future—so stay tuned!

Music Xray was co-founded by Mike McCready, and incepted on September 13, 2006, according to its BBB profile.

Also, the company has an alternate name called Platinum Blue Music Intelligence.

The name was the company name they used in 2006. And then, in 2009, they changed their name in July 2009.

Music Xray is currently headquartered in New York City.

I’ve also reviewed another platform in the same field—Playlist Push. Other GPT platforms that you also find interesting include—Dabble App, Rapidworkers,  Idle-Empire, and LuxSurveys, to name a few.

How do Music Xray works?

If you are an independent artist or just starting out, then Music Xray might just help you get the exposure you need.

You’ll not only have the opportunity to spread your music but earn income as well.

Now, let’s explore how you can overall benefit from the platform.

How it works is by submitting your original composition to publishers and allowed it to be reviewed by members who signed up as a listener.

If your listener liked what they hear, they might provide tips in return to support your music.

Another opportunity that you may have to exercise is listed in the artist’s dashboard.

You can choose from any of those opportunities. But take note that submission is not free, and you may have to pay a certain amount to publish your original songs.

How much the submission fee would cost depends on the publisher. The fee, however, is believed to range from $15 to $20.

Aside from being able to distribute your music, the artist shall also have an opportunity to get selected by industry professionals if they liked their songs.

How much you earn depends on the publisher you engaged in.

The returns are said to be high, and exposure produces great results if you get the break you needed.

In my own view, entering the music industry is a huge gamble. Even though let’s say that your music good and you believe that it is good, there are still no guarantees that the general public would accept your art.

That’s just part of the business, I guess, but if you consider yourself a risk-taker, then by all means—I admire your courage!

But remember to put things in proper perspective because you still have to spend some money.

Get-Paid-To Listen (Fan Match)

As mentioned earlier, their GPT service is unavailable at the moment. However, they promise to put this feature back somewhere in the future.

They explained that they are working on improving the site.

Let’s discuss this feature anyway for future references so that you might have a good idea of how the program worked when it returned.

How the income stream works are as easy as it sounds—you earn income just by listening to music composed by independent artists.

This may be the case—do not expect the payout to be that high as well.

Unlike other GPT platforms where you have a dashboard that you use to select the project you want to work on, Music Xray is far different from most.

Once you registered, you need to wait for uncertain periods for emails containing the music you have to listen to.

 You earn ten cents per music you listen to. Once the transaction is accomplished, you don’t get the payment immediately.

You have to accumulate at least $20 to withdraw your income.

Tips

Another income stream that the company offers is through tips.

How this works is, for example, your listener really loves your craft, and then they want to support your music by giving monetary assistance.

But before you can earn tips, you need to set up a tip jar first.

After setting up your tip jar, Music Xray deducts 10% fee from your tip.

You can also share the link of the tip jar through social media platforms. Doing so enables your fans to conveniently give you a tip whenever they want to.

How to register?

The platform is available worldwide. So it doesn’t where you’re from—as long as you can create and believe in art or you just want to earn some extra money, then it’s all good.

You must also be at least 18 years old to join because that’s also the minimum age requirement when using PayPal.

The registration is relatively simple. You can sign up with Facebook or Gmail if you want. But if you’re not comfortable with it, then you can create an account.

As you signup, you’ll be asked whether you are an ARTIST or an INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL.

If your intention in joining is to submit music or listen to music, then choose ARTIST either way. This is because the INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL is intended for people looking for a music artist.

The platform is free to join, but as mentioned, there may be submission fees for artists.

Payout method

Once you accumulated a minimum of $20, you can now withdraw your earnings.

The money will be credited to your PayPal account once you requested a payout. This may only apply to the income you’ve earned through GPTs and tips.

Actually, PayPal is the most common way

The payout method may differ for musicians because the professional industry may provide you an account where they’ll credit your income.

Fortunately, once the musician and professional industry reached an agreement, Music Xray would no longer take cuts in the income.

Is it a reliable source of income?

If you’re thinking of quitting your day job and do GPT tasks instead, then you are making a huge mistake.

Listening to music as a career is a wonderful prospect, but income from them won’t be enough even to support your monthly expenses.

As you may have seen in this review, your income per song is only ten cents.

Also, you have to consider that the songs that you’re going to review are not consistent. It means that there’s a high probability that the songs sent to your email would be irregular.

I doubt that earnings from such a platform would even break into the hundred dollars in a month.

As for musicians, if you consider yourself a risk-taker and willing to take any hardship while pursuing your dreams, then by all means. I say it again—I admire your courage.

But, in general, I say that Music Xray is only a good source of extra cash.

Low-income potential

Earnings from such platforms are very low.

Limited opportunities

As a GPT, they don’t provide a lot of opportunities.

High withdrawal requirement

Considering how low the ten cents per song and limited the opportunities are, they have a pretty high withdrawal requirement of $20.

There were also comments that they seem to limit opportunities more as soon as you’re reaching the $20 plateau.

Poor BBB rating

The Better Business Bureau or simple the BBB is one way most people do to check the credibility of a business.

Having a poor rating may indeed have an impact on their decision-making, especially when it is combined with critical comments such as in the following section…

I did not find any reason to believe that Music Xray is a scam.

In fact, they are in the business for a long time, which says a lot about their reputation and ability to manage a business.

Again, I like to mention that the GPT feature of Music Xray is currently unavailable. But they do state that the feature would reinstate in the future.

Although the business is practically legitimate, I still don’t recommend them or any online money-making scheme if your desire is financial freedom.

Potential earnings as GPT are very low and unstable. On the other hand, the earnings as a musician are risky—this is especially true if the artist is just starting out.
