What is Transcription Express (VIQ Solutions)?
Transcription Express is now known as VIQ Solutions.
It is a US-based company that provides opportunities to earn income online, particularly transcriptionist jobs.
The company was founded by Darren and Terry Hurst in 1995. They currently service 49 US states—providing transcription services that are related to the government, insurance, legal, or corporate.
They produce a large volume of transcription files per week, which is approximately 4,500.
On their website, they have indicated that the length of their contracts is more or less 17 years. In addition, they state that 90% of their clients are among the Fortune 50.
If so, then they must be a really good company to work for.
However, they also mentioned that 0% of their transcriptionists are outside of the United States. If they do not accept workers from overseas, why even mention this.
Well, if you’re residing in the United States, then you’re in luck!
But if you’re from other countries, I also reviewed other transcriptionist platforms in the past. You can check them if you like—Crowdsurf, Speechpad, Babbletype, 3Play Media, and MegaTypers.
The registration process
As mentioned, Transcription Express is now VIQ Solutions.
And when you search online for their portal online, it’ll show you two different sites.
One website says VIQ solutions as soon as the page loads, but it is still under the transcriptionexpress.com. And then the other website is, in fact, viqsolutions.com.
To sign up as a transcriptionist, you may still have to go for the website transcriptionexpress.com. Or you may contact one of their team members or go directly to the career section of viqsolutions.com by clicking here.
I’ve also tried to sign up even though I’m residing outside of the United States, but with no success as expected—the registration page doesn’t even load up.
But as I said, this should be no problem if you’re living in the United States.
Based on my research, it seems like the registration process looks like a typical job interview.
The first part is that you will need to pass evaluation first before you can fully work for them.
And then, the company will conduct background checking once you pass, which costs payment of $70.
In case of breach of contract, the applicant would have to settle a penalty of $250.
It is inconvenient to the applicant, but of course, this is understandable for the company.
In order to provide quality service to their clients, they have to maintain standards within their organization.
If you want a better source of income, then below is what you’re looking for. They do not require evaluation of whatsoever or implement penalty charges.

How does Transcription Express work?
How transcription jobs work is relatively straightforward. So basically, your main job, once you’re accepted, is to transcribe files from corporations, legal documents, and the government.
But how fast you finish them may depend on your typing speed.
In general, this is the nature of transcription services.
Depending on what you file you’re working on. If it’s an audio or video file, then you will need a good pair of headphones to clearly hear what’s being said.
Another important thing here is the strength of your internet connection because of the files that you may have to download and upload. And then, it may also involve constant communication with your clients.
I can no longer explain this further since I essentially can’t register. But this is the main thing you should know about the nature of this job.
The payment process
Based on the information I’ve gathered, the member of this platform shall earn about $1.40 per transcribed page.
In my opinion, if this is true, it is very low considering how strict they are in recruiting new transcribers.
To compare with other less demanding platforms like Crowdsurf—its member receives $0.10 to $0.30 per audio minutes. This means that the members of Crowdsurf could earn anywhere from $6 in an hour.

To compare another transcription provider, let’s take, for example, a platform called AcuTran Global that provides about $21 per audio hour.
Or you may refer above and check out the other reviews I’ve done in the past.
Lastly, I’m not sure how they provide payment to its transcribers. But PayPal is the most commonly used mode of payment for freelance and remote workers.
Is it a reliable source of income?
If you’re thinking of quitting your day job and pursue transcribing jobs as a living instead, then you are positively making a huge mistake!
As you may have seen, potential income from them is extremely low, which I doubt would be able to sufficiently support you in any way.
In addition, it is not stable because you won’t be getting gigs consistently—there may be days that gigs are available and days there’s nothing at all.
Therefore, your earnings from them are only as good as a source of extra income only.
Maybe making sufficient income in transcribing is possible, depending on the company you’re working with. One example is 3-Play Media. But like Transcription Express, you have to be residing in the United States, especially within the Boston area.
But this is not the case with Transcription Express—they are very low and unstable.

Is Transcription Express a scam?
I did not find any reason to believe that Transcription Express in any way.
Transcription Express is a legitimate company that provides income opportunities through transcribing files from the government, corporate, and legal.
The only downside of this platform is that it is low-paying and inconsistent.
What I Don't Like About Transcription Express
Membership fees
Although the $70 initial membership isn’t that expensive, there are paid survey platforms that provide free membership and higher income.
Breach of contract
Let’s say that you mistakenly provided them information. It was unintentional and an honest mistake; even so, you may still have to settle a $250 breach of contract.
Infrequency of gigs
The number of gigs may not come as often as what you might have expected it.

The company gained a positive rating in one of the most reputable rating agency—the Glassdoor. (1)
Long history
The company is in business for 25 years now.
Being in this business for this long says a lot about the company’s credibility.

Although the platform is legitimate, I think you should search for other transcription sites if this is your thing.
I can understand the low-income potential if your main purpose is to use them as a source of extra income.
But if you have membership fees and settlements in case you breached a contract, I feel that you should exercise your options.
There are far better transcriptions out there—one that provides higher income and less strict in recruiting new transcribers.
