They also offer a lot of benefits to the pet sitter or walker.
In this review, we will be focusing on whether the company is a good source of income for the pet sitter, or should they avoid them.
Before we begin, I’d like to disclose that I am no way connected with Barkly Pets. Also, I am not promoting their services in any way.
The purpose of this review is to provide information to people contemplating on joining Barkly Pets—whether to join or not to join.

What is Barkly Pets?
Barkly Pets is a pet care service that was founded in 2015.
The business was the brainchild of Jim Camut, Dave Comiskey, and Chris Gonzales—all of which are currently residing in Washington, DC.
They stated that the idea came to them as a result of their difficulty in finding pet care service anytime they have an emergency.
Thus, Barkly Pets was born. It is the perfect solution whenever you need someone to take care of your beloved pets anytime you’re away from home.
The company aims to put your mind at ease, and that you can rest assured that your pet is well-taken care of. Thus, it allows you to focus more on whatever task is on hand.
The application allows pet owners to schedule walks or on-demand.
What makes Barkly Pets distinguished from other pet care service platforms is that it is non-commission based!
What it means is that the pet sitter keeps almost 100% of its earnings! I’ll explain more about this in the next sections.
In addition, the business is also the grand prize winner of the Pet Care Innovation Service.
Being the recipient of the award gave them a $10,000 cash incentive and a slot in Global Pet Expo booths, which gave them exposure.
Barkly Pets is currently available in fifty states and four major cities. However, this platform is currently not available outside of the United States.
Other similar platforms that you may find include Wag and Rover.

How Barkly Pets work
How the platform works is pretty straightforward.
If you’ve used Uber or Grab before, you may observe that Barkly Pets sort of works the same way.
By this, I mean that Barkly Pets also offers a mobile application wherein you can book a pet sitter. This is on top of their official website if you wish to use it.
If your desire is to earn some extra cash, then Barkly Pets is a great place, to begin with. This is especially true if you have a pet care service background or just an animal lover.
As mentioned earlier, Barkly Pets offers one of the most attractive incentives to pet sitters.
You can set your own rates
First and foremost is you can set your own rates. Of course, you need to be extra aware of how much you put into your rates.
If you’re a newbie with no experience, then setting up your price that is extra high may turn off some of your potential clients.
Non-commission basis
It is not a commission basis—you get almost 100% of your income.
The only deduction you obtain is the 3% service fee to cover the transaction cost.
You might argue that it just the same because you’ve been deducted somehow.
Well, not really because the service fee isn’t that high and would only cost you a few cents.
For example, if you receive $30 per pet sitting, then you get $29.1 ($30 x 97%).
If you can compare it to, let’s say, for example, Rover—they keep 20% of the pet sitters’ income. On top of that, they charge the client with a 5% to 7% service fee.
Using the same example above, their member receives $24 ($30 x 80%) as a result of pet sitting. This is way lower compared to what Barkly Pets has to offer.
Pet sitters or dog walkers are bonded and insured
Barkly Pets’ well-known competitors like Rover and Wag had problems in the past in regards to injured pets.
But this is not the case with Barkly Pets because unlike most pet care services out there—they do offer insurance in case any such circumstance happens.
As good as it may sound—this platform is not a good source of income. Also, as mentioned earlier, it is not available outside of the United States. Thus, you will not benefit from any of their offerings.

The registration process and how much will it cost me to join
Signing up to become a pet care service provider for Barkly Pet is absolutely free.
You can register with them anytime and anywhere. All you will need is your smartphone and pass the evaluation process.
First and foremost, you have to download the mobile application, which you can get from either the Google Play Store or App Store for iOS users.
And then fill basic information like name, address, create a password, etc.
You have to submit your credentials and references to be verified by the company.
And lastly, you have to pass their assessment test.
It may sound a lot, but you have to understand that the company has to set standards and follow through.
If you have experience with freelance platforms like UpWork, Fiverr, and People Per Hour, it is what they do in order for them to provide quality service to their clients.
Once approved, you will also need to set up your banking details to enable them to deposit in your account during paydays.
For the pet owner, you may have uncertainties about having strangers entering your homes.
Although these pet sitters or dog walkers have passed the screening test, it is a legitimate worry to have because they are still a complete stranger.
If this is your concern, then Barkly Pets have the solution for you.
The company offers a lockbox service wherein you don’t have to leave your keys at your home. It is their way of safeguarding the clients’ interests.
Is it a reliable source of income?
Well, absolutely not. If you’re thinking of quitting your day job and pursuing your dream of becoming a pet care service provider, then you’re making a huge mistake.
The income from Barkly Pets is only as good as a source of extra cash.
Although you can set the pricing, I think nobody would hire you if you charge clients at a high price.
The average income for pet sitters is $20 to $50 per pet sitting or dog walking. You also have to take consideration that works are not regular, and you have to compete with other sitters.
Even though you get almost 100% of your income, I find it hard to believe that you can make a living out of it, considering the abovementioned scenarios.

What I Don't Like About Barkly Pets
Not available outside of the United States
As amazing as their incentive sounds, the platform is currently not available outside of the United States.
New to cities in some parts of the US
The application was recently launched in some cities in the US. Thus, it may be challenging for them to promote their services and find clients.
No BBB credentials
The Better Business Bureau or simply the BBB is one way people check the credibility of a company.
Barkly Pets doesn’t have one.
However, it doesn’t necessarily imply that the business is fraudulent in any way. This is because there are legit companies that do so.

No. Barkly Pets is not a scam.
They are a legitimate business that offers pet care services.
